Hudson Valley Lines

Eastern Railroading

The Water Level Route...You Can Sleep

A southbound Amtrak local runs between Albany and New York City, just north of the train station at Hudson, NY.

Another southbound Amtrak local, this time just south of Beacon.

At one time, there were four New York Central tracks (of the West Shore Division) running through my hometown of Teaneck, NJ. Those tracks were eventually cut down to two until CSX gained control of the line after buying half of Conrail, at which point a second passing siding was laid between the two outside tracks.  This shot is a CSX intermodel moving south along the main line in Bogota, NJ.

A few minutes after the intermodel went by, the mixed freight on the right pulled into the siding.

Southbound mixed freight, also at Ridgefield Park, NJ, 2011.

A southbound mixed freight crosses the bridge over Popolopen Creek along the Hudson River, with the Bear Mountain Bridge in the background, 2011.

The light was a little low, so the shutter speed wasn't quite fast enough to get a crisp shot of this northbound mixed freight doing about 40 MPH, but I like the shot anyway.  This is at Highland, NY, with the old New Haven bridge over the Hudson in the background, 2011.

Same mixed freight at Highland as above.  I like the symmetry of the tank cars, framed by the telephone poles and bridge.

Eastbound freight leaving Selkirk Yard, 2011.

Same train leaving Selkirk Yard.  It has just entered the northern end of the CSX River Line.  The two tracks that continue due east to the left are bound for Boston, while the single track curving north provides access to the Port of Albany.

Part of the engine facility at Selkirk Yard, 2011.

This train is entering Selkirk Yard on the run through track, and will continue west out of the yard.  The light blue building is where the hump yard operations are controlled.

Southbound Metro North commuter train as seen from the Bear Mountain Bridge, 2011.

Northbound Metro North commuter at Garrison, NY, 2011.

Couldn't have planned this one any better if I had tried.  Southbound Amtrak 236 (on right) and Amtrak 69 (the Adirondack) pass on a short causeway in Cold Spring, NY, 2011.

A Metro North commuter bound for Poughkeepsie pops out of Breakneck Tunnel, 2011.

View of Metro North and Amtrak trains at the Poughkeepsie station.  This was taken from the old New Haven bridge, which is now the Walkway Over the Hudson, and part of the Hudson Valley rail-trail.  It makes a great spot for railfanning along the Hudson River.  2011.

Adirondack Scenic tourist train at Thendara, NY, 2011.  This Alco C-424 was first owned by the Erie Lackawanna, followed by British Columbia Railway, and now the Mohawk, Adirondack, & Northern shortline.
